Assumptions

  • Each entered amount is monthly available gross income after only deductions allowed on the official worksheet.
  • The children primarily reside with the receiving parent; shared, split, and approximately one-third parenting arrangements are excluded.
  • Child care, health coverage, dental and vision insurance, medical expenses, Social Security dependency benefits, and children age 18 or older are excluded.
  • Combined income is within the published guideline maximum.

Massachusetts starts in weekly dollars

Table A applies marginal percentages to available weekly income for one child. Table B then multiplies that amount by 1.40 for two children, 1.68 for three, 1.85 for four, or 1.94 for five or more.

When the payer weekly income is $391 or less, the low-income amount is based on that parent income alone. Otherwise, the combined available income drives Table A and the result is allocated by income share.

The guideline formula stops at $450,000 annual combined available income. Any support on income above that level is discretionary.

Worked example: two children

  1. $5,000 and $3,000 monthly income convert to about $1,154 and $692 per week.
  2. The combined weekly income falls in the 18 percent marginal band; the one-child amount is multiplied by 1.40.
  3. The payer earns 62.5 percent of combined income, producing a $341 weekly order or $1,477.67 monthly equivalent.

The steps above follow the calculation method described on our methodology page.

Massachusetts child support calculator FAQs

Why is the result shown monthly?

Massachusetts orders are calculated weekly. The tool shows the exact weekly line and converts it by multiplying by 52 and dividing by 12.

What is available income?

It is gross income after the deductions authorized on the current worksheet, not general take-home pay.

What happens below $392 a week?

The special payer-only low-income bands apply, regardless of the recipient income.

How are additional children handled?

The one-child amount is multiplied by the official Table B factor, capped at the five-child factor.

Does the calculator include child care?

No. Child care, health coverage, and other expense adjustments require additional worksheet sections.

Can a judge deviate?

Yes. The guideline is presumptive and the court may enter supported findings for a deviation.
