Assumptions

  • Total income includes all sources. Entered deductions are limited to the categories allowed by Civil Rule 90.3(a)(1).
  • The engine applies the low-income adjustment when total annual income is $30,000 or less and caps adjusted annual income at $138,000.
  • Health-insurance allocation, uncovered health expenses, visitation credits, and discretionary variations are not included.

How Alaska calculates child support

Primary-custody support is 20 percent of adjusted annual income for 1 child, 27 percent for 2, 33 percent for 3, and 3 more percentage points for every additional child.

If total annual income is $30,000 or less, adjusted income is the lesser of ordinary adjusted income or total income minus $7,500. The standard calculation generally stops at $138,000 adjusted annual income and has a $50 monthly minimum.

Shared custody begins when each parent has at least 30 percent of the year, generally 110 overnights. Reciprocal time-adjusted obligations are offset and the difference is multiplied by 150 percent. Divided custody offsets primary obligations for the children in each home.

Primary rates
20% / 27% / 33% + 3% each additional childsource
Shared threshold
110 overnights with each parentsource
Low-income test
Total annual income of $30,000 or lesssource
Adjusted-income cap
$138,000 annuallysource

Worked example: shared custody

  1. Parent A has $4,000 adjusted monthly income and 146 overnights; Parent B has $2,500 adjusted monthly income and 219 overnights.
  2. The reciprocal sides are $800 x 60%, or $480, and $500 x 40%, or $200.
  3. The $280 difference is multiplied by 150 percent, producing $420 monthly from Parent A to Parent B.

The steps above follow the calculation method described on our methodology page.

Use Rule 90.3 income, not tax-return taxable income

Enter total income from all sources and only deductions Rule 90.3 allows. The calculator applies the special low-income comparison and high-income cap.

Choose divided only when each parent has primary custody of at least one child and no child is shared. Hybrid schedules require the official child-by-child worksheet.

Alaska child support calculator FAQs

What are Alaska child support percentages?

Civil Rule 90.3 uses 20 percent for one child, 27 percent for two, 33 percent for three, and 3 additional percentage points for each child after three.

What counts as shared custody in Alaska?

The written custody order must give each parent at least 30 percent and no more than 70 percent of the year, generally 110 through 255 overnights.

What is the Alaska low-income adjustment?

At total annual income of $30,000 or less, adjusted income is the lesser of ordinary adjusted income or total income minus $7,500.

Is there a minimum child support amount?

The primary-custody minimum is generally $50 per month. Paragraph (b) calculations can offset reciprocal minimum amounts.

What happens above $138,000?

The percentage normally applies only through $138,000 of adjusted annual income. A court may add support above the cap when just and proper based on the children needs and standard of living.

Does this calculate hybrid custody?

No. Hybrid custody combines primary and shared schedules child by child and needs more placement detail than this estimator collects.

Good to know in Alaska

  • The Alaska Court System publishes DR-305 through DR-308 forms for the four custody schedules.
  • Civil Rule 90.3 permits an extended-visitation reduction only when the order allows it and the qualifying visitation occurs.
