New Jersey Child Support Arrears Calculator 2026

New Jersey arrears carry a strange double status. Every missed payment automatically becomes a court judgment, which sounds severe, and it is. Yet the balance on the Probation ledger does not grow interest month by month. The interest question only opens when the debt is collected, and this page shows exactly how.

How arrears work in New Jersey

Arrears are support installments that came due and went unpaid. New Jersey gives them unusual legal weight from day one: under N.J.S.A. 2A:17-56.23a, past-due child support is a judgment by operation of law on or after the date it is due. For cases paid through Probation, the unpaid amount is docketed automatically as a civil judgment on the first of the following month. No motion, no hearing; the judgment simply exists, with the liens and enforcement reach that judgments carry.

Here is the part that surprises people in both directions: being a judgment does not mean interest is quietly compounding. The Administrative Office of the Courts spelled it out in a December 2019 notice: child support judgments are subject to post-judgment interest under Rule 4:42-11 at the time of satisfaction or execution. In plain terms, Probation does not add interest to the running balance. Interest is calculated once, when the arrears are being paid off or collected on, usually at the judgment creditor’s request, and Probation may assist with that calculation if the creditor authorizes it.

The rate itself resets every calendar year from the State cash-management-fund average. For 2026 it is 4.5 percent for judgments at or below the $20,000 Special Civil Part limit and 6.5 percent, the rate plus two points, for larger judgments. Because the rate applies at the end of the story rather than along the way, two people can look at the same New Jersey ledger and honestly quote different totals: the balance today, and the balance plus end-stage interest if it were satisfied today.

The judgment status still has teeth without running interest. Docketed support judgments reach real estate, survive as liens, and back the usual enforcement arsenal: income withholding with an arrears add-on, tax refund and lottery interception, license suspension, passport denial, credit reporting, bench warrants for ignored enforcement hearings. And vested installments cannot be retroactively modified; a change reaches back only to the filing date of the motion.

How to use this estimate

Enter the unpaid principal and the months it has been outstanding. Because New Jersey does not accrue interest on the running balance, the tool reports the principal as the balance, with the judgment-status explanation attached. That matches what the Probation ledger will say.

If you are the parent owed the money and the arrears are about to be satisfied or executed on, know that you can ask for post-judgment interest under R. 4:42-11 at that point. The math depends on when each installment vested and which annual rates applied, so it is a case-specific calculation; this page names the right rule and the current rates rather than guessing at your timeline.

For an official balance, request a statement from Probation Child Support Enforcement or check the NJ child support portal. Their ledger reflects payments, interceptions, and adjustments a single-number estimate cannot.

What this estimate includes

  • The arrears principal you enter, reported without invented running interest
  • The judgment-by-operation-of-law status of each missed payment, with the statute named
  • The R. 4:42-11 end-stage interest mechanism and the 2026 rates, cited so you can raise them at the right moment

What it leaves out

  • Interest arithmetic at satisfaction or execution, which depends on vesting dates and each year’s rate
  • Payment histories, intercepted refunds, and Probation ledger adjustments
  • Interest another state lawfully added before a case transferred to New Jersey
  • Current support still accruing under the order

New Jersey arrears FAQs

Does New Jersey charge interest on child support arrears?

Not on the running balance. Probation does not add interest month by month, so the ledger grows only when new payments are missed. Interest exists in New Jersey law, but it attaches at the end: when arrears are satisfied or executed on, post-judgment interest under Rule 4:42-11 can be computed on what was owed, usually at the request of the parent who is owed the money.

Is unpaid New Jersey child support really a court judgment?

Yes, automatically. N.J.S.A. 2A:17-56.23a makes past-due support a judgment by operation of law as of the due date, and support payable through Probation is docketed as a civil judgment on the first of the following month. That gives the debt lien power over real estate and full judgment enforcement, without anyone filing a motion.

What are the 2026 New Jersey post-judgment interest rates?

For calendar year 2026: 4.5 percent for judgments at or below the $20,000 Special Civil Part limit, and 6.5 percent for judgments above it. The rate is set annually from the State cash-management-fund average and changes each January, which is one more reason interest is computed at collection time instead of being stamped on the ledger.

Can New Jersey back child support be reduced or forgiven?

Vested arrears cannot be retroactively modified: a support change reaches back only to the date a modification motion was filed, and everything that vested before then stays owed. Arrears assigned to the state can sometimes be compromised through state programs, but money owed to the other parent belongs to that parent, and only they can agree to settle it.

How does New Jersey actually collect arrears?

Through the judgment and the enforcement toolkit rather than interest pressure. Income withholding takes current support plus an arrears payback, capped overall by the federal CCPA tiers. On top of that: federal and state tax refund interception, lottery prize interception, license suspension, passport denial, credit bureau reporting, judgment liens on property, and enforcement hearings that can end in a warrant when ignored.

Someone quoted me a New Jersey arrears balance with interest built in. Is that right?

Ask what they are quoting. The Probation ledger is principal only, so a day-to-day balance should carry no interest line. A payoff in the context of satisfying the judgment, on the other hand, may lawfully include R. 4:42-11 interest that the creditor requested. Both numbers can be legitimate; they are answers to two different questions.
